There are a few types of wired controls with no receivers. The most common are Single/Dual Slide Controls, or Rotary Knob Controls.

• A Single Slide control will control ONLY the fan speeds, and requires a two-wire setup (One Hot – Positive, and One Negative/Neutral). The same as an on / off switch.
• A Dual Slide control will control the fan speeds and light, and requires a three-wire setup (Two Hot – Positives, and One Negative/Neutral).
• Fan Knob Controls are typically a two-wire setup. Unless they are equipped with a Light Slide Control, or Toggle Light Control. Then the control will require a three-wire setup (Two Hot – Positives, and One Negative/Neutral). Some knob controls come high amperage and can control up to 10 fans (fan speeds ONLY, no light).

Most Wall Controls with Receivers are wired. Wired wall controls require a two-wire setup and speak with the Receiver via Dip Switches. Dip Switches are tiny little switches (typically 4-8 switches with on/off abilities) within the Wall Control and often on the Receiver (unless the Receiver is a Learn-Receiver, where the Wall Control must be programmed or ‘burned’ into the receiver to speak with each other). The Dip Switches on the Receiver and the Wall Control must match each other in order for the fan to function. Wireless wall controls work in the exact same fashion, but require a tiny battery to operate. (Typically a 12 Volt A23 Battery, commonly found in local stores / hardware stores.)

Most Remote Controls with Receivers speak via Dip Switches. Dip Switches are tiny little switches (typically 4-8 switches with on/off abilities) within the Remote Control and often on the Receiver (unless the Receiver is a Learn-Receiver, where the Remote Control must be programmed or ‘burned’ into the receiver to speak with each other). The Dip Switches on the Receiver and the Remote Control must match each other in order for the fan to function. Most remotes require a tiny battery to operate. Most controls that speak to receivers function via Dip Switches (explained previously). Though, on the other hand, some Receivers are learn-receivers and require a specific command from the Remote / Wall Control to function. Every manufacturer has a different set of commands required for the receiver to listen. These commands will be explained further under the individual manufacturer F.A.Q.

Most controls come with a dimming function capability. While most light fixtures are transitioning or come with CFL (Compact Fluorescent Bulbs) these however do not having the dimming function capability and in conjunction with the controls that do may not work properly or have a slight hum noise, to the extent of burning out the receiver / computer board.

Please check the following possible reasons & solutions: Check your batteries to see if they need to be replaced. Check the indicator light on the transmitter. Check the dip switches in both the remote and the receiver (if non-learn receiver) to make sure both are in the same position. If the switches are in the correct position and the remote is not functioning, the alternative cause could be the receiver in the fan. Check the wall switch by flipping it on and off, then retry.

The remote controls are designed to use radio frequency to control the fan and lights. The cause of your remote turning on and off on its own may be because it is picking up another radio frequency. They are designed to pick up any range up to 40ft. If you have multiple fans in your home using different remotes, you will need to change the individual remotes to different frequencies.

Most fans with older control systems that have been discontinued (parts, receivers, controls, etc.) need to be updated to a more current control system. If the fan has no separate receiver and the receiver is built into the fan, it is likely that it needs to be updated as well. Universal Control Systems do not include the reverse function. If your fan has a reverse switch on the motor housing then that is the only way to reverse the fan, via the switch. Otherwise, unless stated on the available control that’s included or the upgrades, the fan cannot be reversed via wall or remote control.

While it is possible to have a remote control multiple fans, it is not recommended. The frequencies can get blocked off and ideally un-sync the fans. For example - both fans are on high speed and you’re not close enough to both so one will stay on high speed and the other will change to the new speed pressed. Thus it is recommended to have one control unit per fan.

While there are many types of wall controls that control multiple ceiling fans. There are however, no wall controls that will control multiple ceiling fans with lights. Currently, we do not sell any type of CFL light fixture that is equipped with the dimming ability. • Casablanca XLP-2000 / XLP Plus – The leading motor type in the industry alongside the Emerson K55XL and the Fanimation FK2100. This motor type is distinguished with its Polyeurathane Flywheel technology; which gives the fan blades a sense of ‘float’. With exceptional performance and noise-free operation for the life of the fan.
• Emerson K55XL – In 1986 Emerson introduced the top-of-the-line K55 motor with the Silent Rubber Hub becoming the industry standard for quiet and high performance motors.
• Fanimation FK2100 – Following the Rubber Flywheel technology, Fanimation designed the FK2100 for optimal performance and lifetime guarantee.
• DC Motor – The motor of the new era. This motor requires less electrical current by utilizing an internal array of magnets of opposing polarity. This magnetic field requires much less electrical energy to create the torque required to rotate the motor’s rotor. This motor type is virtually silent, while generating more power / torque than conventional ceiling fan motors and consuming less than 70% of the power.

There is a few types of direct drive motors. The type of motor directly correlates with the size of the motors diameter. Direct Drive motors are the most common types of motors in ceiling fans. Large powerful motors consist typically of 200+ mm in diameter. Large motors consist typically of 188+ mm in diameter. Medium motors consist typically of 153+ mm in diameter, while anything below 153mm is considered a small motor.

Reverse during the cold season, and forward during the hot season. To know your fan is spinning it Reverse, it should be spinning clockwise. To know if your fan is spinning forward, it should be spinning counter-clockwise.

Check to see if a screw or nut is loose. Check the fan pole mounts to make sure it’s secured. Check the mounting bracket located under the canopy to make sure it’s secured to the junction box and ceiling. Make sure that all screwed and nuts are tightened.

In this case, the capacitor in your ceiling fan has gone bad. The fact that it is making a humming noise is the fan is still receiving power but does not have the ability to spin with a bad capacitor. These parts are available for replacement, but any uncertified ceiling fan technician that opens the motor housing of your fan will cause the fan to void warranty. Another cause for this to happen is the control system for your fan may be the wrong type of system, thus causing the humming noise without the motor to spin.

There are a few types of blades and all vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. To get it out of the way - The blades we sell at CeilingFan.com are manufacturer specific (as in they only work with that specific manufacturers fans and from there are limited to which fans they work with). The types of blades are as follows:

• Standard Blades – Standard blades are the industry’s staple blades. Typically these blades are press board and are lower quality. Though, most of our manufacturers offer higher end blades (some included in the base price) which are Real Wood, Furniture Grade Veneer – some even being 7-layered to not warp and last a lifetime.
• Plastic ABS Blades – Plastic blades are often found on Contemporary / Modern styled fans, and Outdoor Damp / Wet Location Fans. Plastic is found on outdoor fans specifically to avoid warping to environmental conditions.
• Metal Blades – Metal Blades are found typically on any Industrial or Heat Fan type. Not recommended for standard ceilings or home applications to where anyone can reach the fan.
• Tropical Blades – Tropical blades have their up and down sides. While they look great aesthetically, some lack in terms of air movement in comparison to standard / plastic blades. When purchasing a tropical ceiling fan always make sure to check the CFM’s in the technical specs to make sure you’re getting the air movement you’d like. Note: Some Wicker blades allow air to seep through the blades as they rotate - often creating a noise from this effect.

Blade span is the measure of the diameter of a ceiling fan. From blade tip to blade tip. We have fans ranging from 20” to 84” for all different applications. From Laundry Rooms, Closets, Bathrooms, Garages, Storage Rooms, Guest Rooms, Bed Rooms, Living Rooms, Dining Rooms, Kitchens, Patios, Porches, Vaulted Ceilings, Cathedral Ceilings, and more. Blade span is dependent on room size. Typically a smaller fan is more applicable for a laundry room, or walk in closet. Mid-size fans may be best for smaller guest rooms, small kitchen areas. Larger fans for cathedral ceilings, master bedrooms, etc.

• Small Blade Spans – We have ceiling fans ranging from 20” to 36” in diameter. These fans are recommended for small rooms and small compact areas. Such as Laundry Rooms, Closets, Bathrooms, etc.
• Mid-Size Blade Spans – We have ceiling fans ranging from 40” to 48” in diameter. These fans are recommend for those who don’t want to go to the ‘standard’ size ceiling fans and would like to save a little space on the ceiling, or if the applications doesn’t call for a ‘standard’ size ceiling fan. Typically used in bed rooms, guest rooms, kitchens, storage rooms, or smaller patios and porches.
• ‘Standard’ Blade Spans – Let’s use the term ‘standard’ loosely. It’s all about your preference. Ideally fans around the 50” to 52” are standard for bedrooms 10 ft. x 10 ft. or larger. Some may say the fan is overwhelming, and while that may be true they make a Mid-Size Blade Span for you! We qualify 50” to 56” in diameter to be ‘Standard’. As in this is the most popular choice of blade span in the industry and the most widely used in many applications. Ideally when choosing a fan I would start looking for fans within this range then you can always adjust from here to better grasp what suits your application.
• Large Blade Spans – We have ceiling fans ranging from 60” – 72” in diameter. Fans within these ranges are the most common of the larger blade spans, with some going over 72” but those applications are not too common. Larger fans definitely suit large living rooms, cathedral ceilings, large master bedrooms, etc. The difference in larger fans between the ‘standard’ blade span, typically start with the motor. The motor in a larger fan, well… is larger! The torque required to start up, and move the pitch of the massive blades call for the largest motors in the industry. If your large room is only equipped for one fan application, then this would be your choice. Otherwise it’s not unheard of people going with two ‘Standard’ size fans within a large room either.

Blade Pitch is the angle at which the blade is positioned off of the blade holder. The lesser the pitch, the easier it is for the fan to spin. Ideally, a fan with a small blade pitch (10-13 degrees) will require a smaller motor to circulate the air. The smaller the pitch on a fan, the less air the fan is going to move. A fan with a larger blade pitch (14-20) requires a larger motor to circulate the air. The larger the pitch on a fan, the more air the fan is going to move.

Dynamically three blades are best. But when choosing the three blade route it is typically harder to balance, and some of the time you may get a wind chop. The more popular choice would be five bladed ceiling fans.

As far as replacement blades go, they are sold in sets of 5. Or dependent on which fan, sets of 2, 3, or 4 blades. They are sold in complete sets. Each set is balanced to each other for less chance of wobble.

Due to the nature of the materials and the hand-crafted / automated processes; stain, color, texture and shading will vary. Also depending on your computer monitor and graphic cards settings, some computers may view the colors differently.

While this is possible, it is not recommended. Each set of blades are specifically balanced for the ceiling fans they work with. By staining or custom painting your fan blades puts your ceiling fan at risk of wobbling.

While most fans come with an included downrod standard for an 8’ ceiling, this may not suit your application. Thus, each manufacturer offers select sizes of downrod and here is what we recommend to use at which ceiling height.

• 8’ Ceiling – Standard Downrod (Included) unless the fan requires a 9’ or 10’ ceiling (fan specific).
• 9’ Ceiling – 6” Downrod
• 10’ Ceiling – 12” Downrod
• 11’ Ceiling – 18” Downrod
• 12’ Ceiling – 24” Downrod
• 13’ Ceiling – 36” Downrod
• 14’ Ceiling – 48” Downrod
• 15’ Ceiling – 60” Downrod
• 16’ Ceiling – 72” Downrod
• 18’ Ceiling – 96” Downrod (Casablanca only)

A coupler is the joint in which two downrods can be connected together to further lengthen a downrod beyond what is sold individually. Each coupler is manufacturer specific as are the downrods.

Ceiling fans should not hang any lower than 7 ft. from the floor.

Downrods, if not threaded at both ends can be custom cut but cannot be purchased at a custom length.

Most of all downrods are manufacturer specific and not likely to be found at local hardware stores. Some downrods can be used with other manufacturers but is not recommended. Some fans have exclusive downrods which may only be used with specific models of fans.

Majority of our fans we sell have a hanging ball that goes into a bracket within the canopy on the ceiling. These hanging balls have a way they set within the bracket, and you need to make sure the hanging ball has ‘set’ into the bracket or else you may have a potential ceiling fan wobble on your hands.

Dome light fixtures are very popular with consumers who are trying to limit the depth or the length in which the light fixture hangs down as these types of light fixtures are more low profile than bowls or light fitters. Most Dome light fixtures come with Halogen bulbs, while some others come with Candelabra Base bulbs.

Bowl light fixtures come in a variety of types and sizes. Some manufacturers sell the bowl separately from the fitter which gives consumers the option of going with CFL (Compact Fluorescent Bulbs) base or Candelabra Based Bulbs – while others sell the fitter and bowl inclusive. Some manufacturers also the ability to convert their bowl light fixture to an outdoor light fixture with the placement of a wet location plate, an example of a manufacturer who does this would be Emerson. Each bowl is limited to the color of finials (bottom cap) that are included, so be aware when purchasing what types of finials are included.

Single light fixtures are typically seen are already lit applications where ceiling fan lighting is not priority lighting as single light fixtures are not typically high in wattage.

3-4 Light Fitters / Adjustable Fitters are the common choice for consumers who like directional lighting with a good amount of wattage / light. Typically seen with 4-40 watt bulbs, 4-60 watt bulbs, or 4 CFL Bulbs. Also come with your choice of glass, which is sold separately.

Outdoor Light Fixtures are becoming increasingly popular with people who have little to no patio / porch lighting. Mostly unique in their design, aside from the dome outdoor light fixtures that exist, these light fixtures are able to withstand the elements. Each light fixture varies from Damp to Wet rated. Damp location light fixtures are able to withstand light mists and must be under a covered area. Wet light fixtures are fully enclosed and are able to withstand rain and the ability to be cleaned with a hose. (Note: Make sure your fan is Wet Rated before you do this)

• When screwing in a halogen bulb make sure you do not do it with bare hands / fingers as the moisture and grease from your hands will affect the life of the halogen bulb.
• CFL (Compact Fluorescent) Bulbs are not dimmable and it is recommended that you get the proper control system (non-dimming, or non-dimming switch) for this light fixture type.
• Glass shades can be used on any type of 3-4 light fitter except for the Casablanca Socket-Ring Glass and Socket-Ring Fitters.
• Adjustable 4 Light Fitters have the tendency to droop with heavier glass, if questionable please call 1-877-724-2326 and ask about our glass shades for your fitter choice and which will best work with your fitter.

A 23-watt compact fluorescent bulb is similar to a 100-watt incandescent bulb.

If the fan has a fitter with glass shades that are 2 ¼” we have replacement glass available. It is not recommended that you use a higher wattage than specified. Exceeding the recommended wattage can create a great safety risk to your home.

If your outdoor fan is located in a wet or damp environment, yes. You will need to purchase a compatible outdoor light kit.

Depending on the fan model. If your ceiling fan has a ‘center screw’ within the bottom cap of the motor housing it is most likely you can use a universal ceiling fan light fixture / fitter. Though, some fixtures and fitters vary from finish to finish from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, you may run into Brushed Nickel vs. a Brushed Steel. While this may be similar, the finishes will differ.

A fitter requires glass. A light kit contains all the hardware, attachment pieces and glass required for use on the fan.

Low Ceiling adapters are available for every manufacturer, but not available for every fan as some cannot accept low ceiling adapters. All low ceiling adapters are different per manufacturer and can save you about 4-6” depending on which manufacturer it is. Ideally, unless stated otherwise, all fans come with a short downrod standard for an 8’ ceiling. Low Ceiling Adapters are not too common but definitely worth it if you need to save a few more inches on your fan. Slope Ceiling Kits are available for every manufacturer that we have available. Every manufacturer is different with the requirements of a sloped ceiling adapter being needed, and ideally many consumers that are hanging their ceiling fan on a sloped ceiling will think they need one – but the case in needing a slope ceiling kit is very rare. Most ceiling fans by default work with 29-32 degree slopes with the standard mounting bracket and canopy that is included with the ceiling fan. If you know your ceiling has a higher degree than this we recommend you call 1-877-724-2326 and speak with one of our ceiling fan specialists about your ceiling fan requirements.

Many fans with the Energy Star logo are all about the bang for your buck. Saving money over the years, while running your ceiling fan full time, part time, or purely seasonal. Energy Star qualified ceiling fans provide even greater energy efficiency than normal ceiling fans. Any fan that has the energy star logo and an included light fixture will be equipped with CFL (Compact Fluorescent) Bulbs. If the fan does not include a light fixture and you decide to go with anything but CFL Bulbs, energy star will not apply. So if interested in Energy Star ceiling fans, look for the logo! Every fan under its Technical Specifications will have its CFM Ratings. ‘CFM’ stands for “Cubic Feet per Minute” and directly measures the amount of air moved at high speed. The higher the rating, the more air the fan moves.Eletricity Use is the wattage in which the fan uses. The Airflow Efficiency is the fan's CFM rating divided by the Electricity Use. For Example. If you have a fan with an Airflow of 5000 CFM, and an Electricity use of 91, then the fan will have an Airflow Efficiency of 54.9 per minute per watt at high speed.

Ceiling Fans can help heat during the winter with the use of its reverse function. The reverse function helps circulate the heat that rises to the ceiling by dispersing it alongside the walls and back around the room. To know your fan is spinning in Reverse, it should be spinning clockwise. To know if your fan is spinning forward, it should be spinning counter-clockwise.

Check that the hanger ball (on the downrod) is locked into its slot in the hanger bracket. Also, check to ensure that each blade holder is screwed into the flywheel securely. If wobbling continues, try rearranging the blades around the flywheel.

High end fans typically use quality parts, high end motors to larger sized motors which move more air, motor housings are a die cast metal instead of a stamped metal, blades are made of high quality furniture veneer layers in comparison to particle board. Quite often people want the full function control system and would like their fan as snug as possible to the ceiling. While this application IS possible, it is however not recommended as it is very hard to piece these parts together to work properly. The downrod makes the canopy very snug and hard to work with in fitting the receiver together and could be problem some for installation. This is not recommended, and this setup can only be purchased via our toll-free number.

In 1986 Emerson introduced the top-of-the-line K55 motor with the Silent Rubber Hub becoming the industry standard for quiet and high performance motors. Direct Drive motors do not utilize this technology, though there is a price difference in between the two types of motors we definitely recommend the K55XL.

All other parts & controls – warranted to original purchaser with proof of purchase for (1) year from date of purchase.

Please check the following possible reasons & solutions: Check your batteries to see if they need to be replaced. Check the indicator light on the control. Check the dip switches in both the remote and the receiver to make sure both are in the same position. If the switches are in the correct position and the remote is not functioning, the alternative cause could be the receiver in the fan. Check the wall switch by flipping it on and off, then retry.

The blade sets we recommend for fans that are designed for Damp Locations are the wicker, woven bamboo (any color/shape), or canvas. The only blade we would specifically discourage for use in damp locations is the natural palm leaf blade.

The more narrow blades (e.g., the standard oar and the narrow oval) provide a greater amount of airflow. The use of heavier blade materials (e.g., bamboo or wicker) also increases airflow.

There are a few fans within the Fanimation line that are specifically ‘built-to-order’. These fans are non-returnable. The fans are: The Americana, The Bourbon Street, The Punkah, The Brewmaster, and The Palmetto.

When ordering a fan with a palm blade set, you will receive two spare blades. The wicker, bamboo, canvas, and wood blade sets do not contain any spare/replacement blades.

Dust them regularly with a feather duster or soft dusting brush. Because of their coating and durability, the wicker, bamboo, and wood blades can be cleaned with a damp cloth.

All Monte Carlo fully functional wall controls are battery operated. Unless the wall control is a single slider, dual slider, or rotary wall control, it will be battery operated. Monte Carlo does not sell hard wired fully functional wall controls.

All but three Modern Fan models (Aurora, Aurora Hugger, and Lapa) are rated and marked as “Suitable for Damp Locations”. At this time there are not Wet Location Modern Fan Company ceiling fans available.

While a control is not required to purchase the ceiling fan, all Modern Fan’s require a control to operate. It is highly recommended to use a Modern Fan control system with your ceiling fan than purchase a separate control from another manufacturer.

The two choices available are “IN” and “ES”. “IN” stands for Incandescent, and the included light fixture is available for dimming capabilities. “ES” is for Energy Saving, and the included light fixture is available with CFL Bulbs without the ability to dim.

The controls available for “IN” have the dimming capability for the incandescent bulbs. The controls available for “ES” have the dimming capability disabled for CFL bulbs.
